Modernizing Workforce Analytics

A Federal Intelligence Agency needed to modernize data analytics capabilities to enhance workforce management, optimize technology systems, and improve operational efficiency. The agency faced challenges managing and maintaining multiple applications concurrently while dealing with technical debt and disparate systems across multiple security domains. Harmonizing data from 25+ systems into a unified platform required implementing adaptive workflows and self-service analytics. The agency needed solutions for advanced data visualization, predictive analytics, and automated reporting to enable actionable insights for the Federal Intelligence Agency’s 16,000+ employees. The agency required modern technologies to meet security standards, reduce manual processes, and enhance self-service capabilities while enabling mission-based, data-driven decision-making. 

Kentro addressed the challenges through: 

Agile Application Management | We deployed multiple Agile teams to manage development and integration across 20+ applications. Agile practices, including bi-weekly sprints and backlog prioritization, enabled efficient delivery of new features. 

Advanced Data Analytics | Our data science team implemented Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) pipelines and Python scripting to optimize data structures, automate report generation, and improve data cleansing. We developed Tableau dashboards for custom reporting and data visualization, enabling the instant generation of tailored reports. 

Technology Modernization | Kentro produced a five-year modernization plan, incorporating Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models (LLM), and UI Path for workflow automation. We prioritized the integration of emerging technologies for advanced analytics capabilities. 

Governance and Security | Our cyber-SMEs applied the NIST Risk Management Framework to achieve Authority to Operate for the analytics environment. ISSOs conducted weekly vulnerability assessments, remediating findings using Trellix and Splunk. Our configuration management team handled Storage Area Networks (SANs), virtual machines, and databases to meet operational demands, sustaining 170+ application databases and monitoring 100+ database tasks. 

Training and SOPs | We delivered monthly training sessions and developed five Tableau self-service functionality SOPs, empowering agency staff to run tailored queries and dashboards. We hosted “Innovation Days” to identify new technologies and discuss roadmaps for ongoing advancements. 

Kentro achieved significant results through all efforts: 

• Delivered and maintained 20+ applications simultaneously, enabling the Federal Intelligence Agency to streamline workforce processes across its 16,000+ employees

• Produced 782 recurring and ad hoc reports, reducing reporting demand by automating 25+ frequently requested reports using Python and Tableau

• Developed 150+ dashboards and monthly analytics reports to assess investments, performance, and data quality, providing actionable insights to leadership

• Reduced time required for report generation by 50% through automated workflows and tailored dashboards

• Enhanced data governance by standardizing processes, including naming nomenclature and compliance with protection requirements

• Completed 472 out of 535 security controls for the analytics environment, enhancing operational readiness and resilience

• Improved data accuracy through Python-powered cleansing processes and SQL script optimization, addressing anomalies and closing data gaps

• Hosted annual “Innovation Days” to propose technologies that enhance business processes and analytics
