Modernizing IT Infrastructure and Security

Kentro strengthened IT systems, cybersecurity, and service delivery for a federal civilian agency—improving uptime, reducing vulnerabilities, and enabling greater mission focus.

Modernizing IT Infrastructure and Security

Challenge

A Federal Civilian Agency needed robust cloud engineering support services to enhance its IT infrastructure and ensure secure, efficient operations for 2,300+ users and 1,800+ endpoints. The organization faced challenges in modernizing its systems, strengthening cybersecurity, managing assets, and improving system performance while maintaining compliance with federal standards.

Action

System Administration & Asset Management | Kentro’s team used AWS tools, Splunk, and SolarWinds for monitoring, maintaining a 99% server uptime. We implemented an ITIL framework to manage 7,500+ hardware assets, leveraging ServiceNow Discovery and CMDB for automated classification and monthly reconciliations.

Security Enhancements | Setup a CyberOps team to coordinate, remediate and resolve both vulnerabilities and POAMs. Various tools were used such as Qualys, Splunk, Crowdstrike, CSAM, QCompliance and ServiceNow. This resulted in a 90% reduction in POAMs and a 40% reduction in vulnerabilities. Additionally, various innovations were used to setup custom dashboards in Splunk with data taken directly from Qualys API in order to assist with visualizing and prioritizing vulnerability remediation.

Database Optimization | The database team developed metadata standards and an enterprise repository, introducing automated backup solutions with 99.999% uptime and reducing recovery time objectives from 4 hours to 30 minutes.

Improved Productivity | IT Analysts prioritized upgrades, assessed tools, and implemented collaboration solutions. The team integrated ITIL 4 and ITSM into a monitoring framework for real-time visibility into 800+ applications, enabling swift resolution of daily alerts.

Result

  • Maintained 99% server uptime and improved first-call resolution rates from 70% to 90%

  • Enhanced data security through hard drive encryption and reduced potential data breaches by 70%

  • Enhanced database recovery time and increased employee productivity by 25%

  • Achieved 100% NIST compliance for network configurations, aligning IT operations with federal standards

Value-Add

Kentro’s support improved the Agency’s IT infrastructure by introducing custom innovations and modernizing processes, and integrating secure, efficient solutions. These efforts enhanced service availability, operational flexibility, and user productivity, enabling the Agency to focus on its mission with greater confidence.
